I'm reading Dungeon Meshi and I think this is my favorite scene so far:

I think this is the first time I've seen Laios well and truly pissed off? He does go on to do the really fucked up thing of tricking them into eating it anyway, but I think it's fascinating that he's so mad that Chilchuck doesn't have a good reason for being grossed out by it. Because Laios sees the value in all living things! They're not somehow special because they look more or less human!

It's been documented that autistic people form attachments to inanimate objects and I have anecdotal experience that we connect more easily with animals - even non-mammals. This scene just screams to me that Laios is angry about... species discrimination?? Like, why is a cow okay to eat, but not a horse? They're both edible. They both form intense bonds with herd members. They both experience what seems to be emotion. Y'all just arbitrarily decided that one is a pet and one is food, and that's fine... but it's a dissatisfying answer to questions about morality.

In this situation, nobody can explain to Laios why eating fishfolk is wrong. Granted, I haven't seen any other edible monsters using tools or communicating, but THOSE WOULD'VE BEEN GOOD POINTS instead of "idk it feels icky".
